Libera Boy Choir from London

Christ Cathedral is thrilled to welcome back the Choir Boys from London called LIBERA! The distinctive sound of Libera has travelled the world in the last few years. The group’s albums have topped both mainstream and classical charts in many countries, and their recordings hold their place in the top-ten charts alongside major artists like Bocelli.
The boys who make up the vocal band Libera have been described as “normal” and “ordinary”. However, as their recordings and performances demonstrate, the music they produce is truly extraordinary. With shimmering, mystical chords and ecstatic harmonies, they are unlike any other group you have ever heard. These are truly sounds to lift the soul. Celestial sounds for a new time.
The singers of Libera who are aged seven to sixteen attend many different local schools in South London and come from a variety of backgrounds. Although they are boys and they sing, they do not think of themselves as choirboys, but rather as an alternative kind of boy band.
While the unique sound of Libera may be impossible to pigeonhole, its universal appeal has endeared the group to fans all over the world, particularly in the US, the UK, the Philippines, South Korea and Japan, where their CDs top the mainstream and classical charts and where they pack concert halls appearing in their trademark flowing white robes on imaginatively lit stages.

Todd Wilson, Organist

PROGRAM
Regarded across America and around the world as one of today’s finest concert organists, Todd Wilson is head of the Organ Department at The Cleveland Institute of Music and is also Director of Music at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Cleveland, Ohio, and Curator of the E.M. Skinner pipe organ at Severance Hall (home of The Cleveland Orchestra).
Mr. Wilson received his bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, where he studied organ with Wayne Fisher. He was coached in organ repertoire by Russell Saunders at The Eastman School of Music. He has won numerous competitions, including the Grand Prix de Chartres and the Ft. Wayne Competition. An active member of the American Guild of Organists, Mr. Wilson holds Fellow and Choirmaster certificates.
Todd Wilson has been heard in concert in major cities throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan, including concerts at Symphony Hall (Birmingham, UK), Los Angeles’ Walt Disney Concert Hall, Philadelphia’s Verizon Hall, Chicago's Orchestra Hall, and the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas. In June 2003 he dedicated the organ in the new 21,000-seat Mormon Conference Center in Salt Lake City. In October 2004 he performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra on the first orchestra subscription series concert featuring the new organ at Disney Hall.
Mr. Wilson is an annual performer on the William J. Gillespie Organ in Segerstrom Concert Hall. We are honored to have him perform here in the Arboretum on our beautiful Aeolian-Skinner Organ for Christ Cathedral Concert in conjunction with the Orange County Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

Celebrate the season with the choirs of Christ Cathedral: The Diocesan Choir, The Diocesan Children's Choir, and the Christ Cathedral Choirs in English, Vietnamese and Spanish! You will help usher in this Christmas season with splendid carols both new and old.
This year’s selections include John Rutter’s Candlelight Carol,dedicated to our beloved music director, Dr. John A. Romeri, and Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria, one of the major choral masterworks of the baroque. The concert will also feature guest tenor, César Sanchez. The hundreds of singers in this choral Christmas spectacular will be accompanied by the Arboretum’s legendary 82-rank Aeolian-Skinner Organ and the Cathedral Orchestra. Christmas at the Cathedral has become an annual tradition. Get your tickets early as last year’s performance was sold out!

CONCERT PROGRAM
Christ Cathedral organist David Ball presents a program of the most beloved organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporaries – from the flashy pedal work of Nicolaus Bruhns to the monumental Passacaglia of J. S. Bach. The concert will feature performances by Dr. John A. Romeri, Dr. Ricardo Soto, Dr. Patricia Lamb, and the Organ Scholars of Christ Cathedral. As a grand finale, three more keyboard instruments will take the stage with the Arboretum’s pipe organ for a spectacular performance of Bach's rarely-performed Concerto for Four Unaccompanied Keyboard Instruments.
The Arboretum’s legendary pipe organ “Fred” was crafted by the famed Aeolian-Skinner company of Boston, and is dedicated to Frederick Swann, the former Crystal Cathedral organist who was responsible for its installation. As we anticipate the re-installation of the Hazel Wright Organ for Christ Cathedral’s dedication in July 2019, come hear the 4,949 pipes of the Arboretum’s world-class pipe organ.

With more than four decades of performance and a catalogue of award-winning recordings, The Tallis Scholars, more than any other musical group, have established sacred vocal music of the Renaissance as one of the great repertoires of Western classical music.
The Tallis Scholars have brought Renaissance works to churches, cathedrals and venues on every continent on the planet except Antarctica, including the Royal Albert Hall, Sistine Chapel, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, Philharmonic Hall Berlin, Saint Mark's Venice, Seoul Arts Centre Korea, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Wigmore Hall, Beijing Concert Hall, Megaron Athens and the Opera House Sydney.

The Sistine Chapel, the heart of the Vatican in Rome, is well-known for having bequeathed a treasure-trove of visual art to posterity. With one notable exception, it is rather less known for the musical treasures which it has nurtured for many centuries. In many cases this is due to the jealous guarding of the music by a series of Popes, who would not allow certain pieces to pass beyond the walls of the chapel. Such is the case, famously, of Gregorio Allegri’s Miserere, which acquired such a mystique through the Sistine Chapel’s monopoly that tracing its journey has become one of the most intriguing musical problems of our time.
Tonight’s programme allows us a privileged glimpse into the heyday of the Vatican of the high Renaissance. The power and prestige of the Papacy was at its apex, and before long the Council of Trent would spur liturgists and artists to the heights of the Counter-Reformation. In this spirit, the continuity in this programme is provided by that most prolific of polyphonists, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. Rather than choose just one setting of the Ordinary of the Mass, Peter Phillips has chosen individual movements from five different masses, forming a composite which shows the remarkable breadth and consistency of Palestrina’s style.
